We took this hike back in October 2023 we hiked the "Shades of Death Trail " the trail is rated difficult
You start the trail at the center the trail is on the left side of the building it is a gravel trial very easy. Then when you start goin down the hill that is when the trail starts to change . IT is dirt with tree roots . And you go down the hill on steps made from rocks. Then your on a small trail and cross a bridge onto a maintenance road . You then come up to a pond you continue on the maintenance road and you will see a sign for the shades of death trail . There are steps to go down and then is all rock you have to hang on trees to walk down the hill and you have to climb over boulders and under a down tree . Then the path gets narrow and rockier . If you go the whole trail it is 1 mile . I would recommend wearing sneakers or a hiking boot for this trail . Take water with you and take your time on the trail and you will have now problems .
Photos are ones I took on the hike .
Despite the gruesome name, this is one of the most picturesque trails in the park. There are also remains of logging mills and dams dating back to the early 1800s.
